The eye is a complex optical system by which we receive the most information from the surrounding environment. The light beams reflected by all surrounding objects penetrate the eye, refract and focus on the retina. This is the refractive capacity of a normal (emmetropic) eye. This system has imperfections in refracting, which are called ‘refractive errors’, such as short-sightedness (myopia), long-sightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism. They are corrected using eyeglasses, contact lenses, and by laser vision correction procedures. The laser eye surgery using excimer laser is the most up-to-date and successful refractive procedure.
What is laser vision correction?
Laser vision correction is a procedure which purpose is to remove a person’s dependence on eyeglasses and contact lenses. By using an excimer laser the eye surgeon reshapes the cornea and thus removes the refractive errors of the eye (short-sightedness, long-sightedness, astigmatism).
Can I have a laser vision correction?
Every laser vision correction candidate must meet a few requirements. He/she must:
- be at least 18 years old;
- not have had any refractive changes in the past year;
- have realistic expectations of the end result of the procedure.
Patients with eye infection or injury as well as some degenerative and autoimmune diseases are not suitable for the procedure.
The most accurate and certain answer to the question whether you may undergo this medical procedure will be given to you by your ophthalmologist upon a thorough eye examination at the Den Eye Clinic.
Laser vision correction essentials
There are two main types of refractive laser correction: superficial correction (PRK / LASEK) and correction involving the creation of a flap (LASIK). Any of those procedures can be performed as a standard or individual correction.
PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) / LASEK (Laser Assisted Epithelial Keratomileusis) is a type of superficial correction where the excimer laser straightens the most anterior portion of the corneal stroma. The way the corneal epithelium is treated varies. In LASEK the epithelium moves and then after the laser ablation returns back to its original position. In PRK the epithelium is removed completely and a longer period of time is needed for it to fully recover.
LASIK (Laser-Assisted In situ Keratomileusis) is a lamellar laser refractive procedure where the excimer laser performs ablation under a lamellar corneal flap. The lamellar flap is created using a microkeratome or femtosecond laser.
Preparation
A thorough eye examination is needed in order to determine whether a patient is a suitable candidate for a laser eye correction using an excimer laser. If you wear soft contact lenses you must stop putting them on 2 weeks before the eye examination, and if you wear hard contact lenses you must stop putting them on 4 weeks before the examination. In the meantime you should wear glasses. This is required in order to restore the normal condition of the cornea and not to compromise the analysis.
On the day of the procedure
One day prior to the procedure and on the day of the procedure, please, do not use any makeup, perfume, deodorant, and facial cream, or any anther cosmetics and preparations on your face. Please, take off your earrings and any other accessories near your face (necklaces, chains, piercings, etc.). The duration of a laser eye surgery itself is about 10 minutes, while the whole stay at the clinic is about 60-90 minutes.
Results
Analyses show that in over 90% of the patients that have undergone vision correction the result is excellent and no additional correction is necessary. However, rarely /in higher lens power cases / wearing eyeglasses but of lower lens power must be needed or you will be offered to redo the procedure for the same eye.
The decision to undergo a laser eye surgery is taken by the patient based on his/her good information and understanding. A laser eye surgery is not a one-time procedure but a process of responsibility and cooperation between the patient and the doctor.
